Why do I wake up with a sore neck and shoulders and how can I prevent it?

Waking up with a sore neck and shoulders is commonly caused by sleeping in a position that doesn’t support your neck or spine.  Many pillows don’t give adequate support to the neck.  If the pillow is too high, it can keep your neck flexed overnight causing morning aches or stiffness.  A pillow that is too low can cause your neck to bend downwards which can cause strain on your muscles.
